The Italian shipping company Grimaldi is advancing sustainable maritime transport through its ambitious GG5G (Grimaldi Green 5th Generation) initiative. Originally planned as a series of six hybrid Ro-Ro vessels, the project has expanded to twelve ships constructed by Nanjing Jinling Shipyard in China. These 238-meter vessels, designed with Danish naval architects Knud E. Hansen, integrate multiple cutting-edge technologies aimed at reducing environmental impact while improving operational efficiency.
At the core of these vessels’ environmental performance is an advanced hybrid propulsion system developed by Kongsberg. This system incorporates lithium-ion batteries that enable emission-free operation while the ships are docked, significantly addressing the issue of port pollution. These features reduce friction and biofouling on the hull, resulting in approximately 5% fuel savings compared to conventional vessels of similar size.
