Discover how Feadship’s Halcyon masterfully blends timeless elegance with cutting-edge innovation in a stunning 14-month refit. Dive into the ultimate yacht transformation that sets a new standard for classic vessel modernization!
The 14-month refit and rebuild of the 46.9-metre motor yacht Halcyon by Feadship Refit & Services stands as a remarkable example of how a classic vessel can be transformed into a modern superyacht without losing its heritage. Originally launched in 2001 as Northern Light, the yacht arrived at Feadship’s Kaag facility in May 2025 for what was initially planned as a significant refit. However, as the project unfolded, it evolved into a near-new build, blending the yacht’s timeless classic design with state-of-the-art upgrades.
One of the key objectives was to enhance both the yacht’s functionality and aesthetics. This included redesigning the stern to incorporate a new staircase connecting the main deck to the swim platform, improving accessibility and flow. The exterior finish was refreshed, and the mast and other details were updated to maintain the original design ethos while introducing modern enhancements. Inside, the bridge was fully modernized with advanced equipment and interior modifications aimed at boosting operational efficiency and comfort for the crew.
The technical scope was extensive. The main engines and gearboxes were overhauled, and new generators were installed. Critical systems such as water production, ventilation, sewage treatment, heating, and fuel management were replaced to meet modern standards. The climate control system was renewed to ensure optimal comfort for both guests and crew. Additionally, upgrades were made to the teak decking, steering system, propeller shafts, bow thruster, rudders, cold storage, and diving equipment. To protect the hull and optimize performance, a new underwater coating system was applied after thorough sandblasting.
This project presented several challenges, primarily the need to integrate modern systems within a classic hull design while preserving the yacht’s heritage aesthetics. The Feadship team demonstrated exceptional engineering skill and design sensitivity, carefully balancing preservation with innovation. The project’s evolution from a refit to a modified new build required great adaptability in planning and execution.
The outcome was a revitalized classic yacht, ready to cruise for many more years. This case sets a new benchmark for classic yacht refits, showing how legacy vessels can be modernized through meticulous planning, technical precision, and respect for the original design. It highlights the value of extending a yacht’s lifecycle and enhancing its performance without compromising its heritage.
For naval architects, shipyard managers, and marine engineers, the Halcyon refit offers valuable insights into managing complex refits that demand flexibility and thorough coordination across multiple technical disciplines.
