At Bird Stainless, we have developed a worldwide reputation as a leading supplier of precision ground propeller shafts. With over 35 years experience, we are a trusted supplier of precision ground bar to the marine industry. Specialising in stockholding extra-long lengths, our stock is tailored to propeller shafting, with lengths over 10M available upon request.
Our in-house precision grinding facility consists of 5 Lidkoping centreless grinding machines with automatic bar feeders, 2 straightening presses and 1 polishing line. We offer in-house precision grinding from 2mm diameter up to 250mm diameter, in lengths from 2,500mm to 14,000mm. We can supply bespoke tolerances, with a typical surface finish of Ra 35 or better, depending on diameter and grade.
Prior to despatch all our precision ground shafts are inspected, Netlon sleeved, wrapped and boxed for protection. All our shafts are supplied with 3.1 certificates and where required, we can upgrade our material with intent to 3.2 certification, supplying material complete with third party inspections by Lloyds, DNV, ABS, BV or RINA.
Stockholding over 2,000 tonnes, we provide immediate access to high strength stainless steels, combined with in-house cutting, precision grinding and straightening facilities. Certain stainless grades are specified as marine-grades for their improved resistance to corrosive marine environments. The marine grades we stock are F51/1.4462, 316L/1.4404, 431/1.4057, 1.4542/17-4PH H1150D and 1.4418 QT900.
Our propeller shafts have been assembled into various types of marine vessels; from workboats to commercial vessels to recreational crafts and superyachts.
