The Future of 3D Printing for Boatbuilding

An open dialogue between industry and creativity: solutions and new perspectives.

This conference will explore the highly topical subject of new materials and construction techniques for boats and yachts, with a special focus on 3D printing technologies.

The roundtable will offer a forum for the exchange of knowledge and ideas among engineers, designers, and industry experts, while attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with the speakers and dive deeper into the latest technical, environmental, and regulatory challenges.

Additive manufacturing presents many advantages for the marine sector: faster production, no need for molds, and a high degree of design freedom, allowing the creation of shapes that are not achievable with traditional methods. These benefits can lead to lighter components, multifunctional designs, and entirely new creative possibilities free from conventional constraints.

The session will also highlight the future developments of a technology that is now gaining strong acceptance and adoption within the marine industry.

Speakers will share their experiences in design, production, and the practical applications of additive manufacturing in yacht and boat construction, outlining both the challenges and the opportunities it brings.

The conference presents FIB3R, the innovative Herambiente–Gruppo Hera plant for the industrial-scale regeneration of carbon fibre composites, which can turn an environmental challenge into a resource for the nautical industry and for the future of the national supply chain.

The first plant in Europe capable of regenerating carbon fibre on a large scale, restoring its typical properties of lightness and strength comparable to virgin material, this innovation makes it possible to recover and reuse composite materials from end-of-life yachts and boats, drastically reducing environmental impact and paving the way for a nautical supply chain that is both sustainable and high-performing.

The process outlined in the conference – from the collection of industrial waste to its regeneration, through to the use of recovered-fibre composites in new production – will also demonstrate how sustainability can be a competitive advantage. FIB3R, in fact, creates short, circular supply chains, enhancing Made in Italy and promoting a new business model based on recovery, reduction, and reuse.
